Do Movers Charge Extra for Stairs?

By Hire Moving Labor Editorial Team · Published

Stairs slow every carry, so many companies price them in. What matters for your budget is not whether a company charges for stairs, but what the full estimate comes to for your exact addresses.

How stair charges work on the marketplace

When you book, you tell us how many flights of stairs sit between the truck and the door at each address and whether there is an elevator. Each company has saved one stair setting:

  • No stair surcharge — stairs are absorbed into the hourly rate.
  • A flat fee per flight — multiplied by the billable flights across both addresses.
  • Extra labor hours per flight — added to the job time and billed at the crew's hourly rate.

What counts as a flight

Count the flights you actually carry through. If an elevator is available and usable for the move, that address counts as zero flights. Reserve the elevator if the building requires it — an elevator that is unavailable on the day means stairs the crew did not plan for.

Porch steps, split-level stairs and stairs down to a basement all affect carry time even when short. Mention them when you describe the job.

Comparing companies for a walk-up move

A lower hourly rate can end up costing more once stairs are added, and a company with no stair surcharge may have a higher rate. Compare the full estimate shown for your addresses — crew size, minimum hours, stair charge and fees together. That is the honest way to answer “who is cheapest for my move.”

Ways to reduce stair time

  • Pack everything into boxes that one person can carry.
  • Disassemble bed frames and tables before the crew arrives if you can do it safely.
  • Clear landings and stairwells, and prop doors open.
  • Reserve the elevator and the loading entrance where a building allows it.

Before you book a stairs move

  1. Flights counted at both addresses.
  2. Elevator availability confirmed (and reserved if required).
  3. Large items listed with the floor they are on.
  4. Estimates compared as full totals, not hourly rates.

Frequently asked questions

Is a third-floor walk-up charged per floor or per flight?
Per flight on this marketplace. A typical floor is one flight, but a building with split landings may have more — count what you actually climb.
Does the stair charge apply at both ends?
When you book loading and unloading, flights at both addresses are added together.
Will I see the stair charge before paying?
Yes. The company's stair charge is part of the estimate shown before you send the request.
