How to Move Out of a Storage Unit

By Hire Moving Labor Editorial Team · Published

Storage move-outs fail on logistics more than lifting: a gate code that stops working at 6 PM, a truck that can't reach the door, or a lease that bills another month because notice went in late. This plan covers the steps in order.

1. Check the facility rules before you book anything

Call or read the rental agreement and write down the answers. These rules decide your booking window more than the crew does.

  • Gate access hours and office hours — they are often different.
  • How much notice the facility wants before you vacate, and whether a partial month is billed.
  • Whether trucks can drive up to the door, or items must go through a hallway, elevator or loading dock.
  • Whether carts or dollies are available on site, and whether the elevator can be reserved.
  • What condition the unit must be left in (swept, empty, lock removed).

2. Size the truck from the unit, not your home

Look at the unit's floor size and how high things are stacked. A packed-to-the-ceiling unit holds far more than its floor size suggests. If you are combining the unit with a home move, add both together. Our truck size guide lists published dimensions to compare against.

3. Pick the right kind of help

Loading help works when you only need the unit emptied into your truck. Unloading help covers the destination. Loading & unloading keeps one company on both ends when both addresses are within its service area. Enter the facility address when you search — coverage is checked against that exact address.

Tell the company it is a storage unit, whether it is drive-up or interior, the floor, and the largest items. Interior units with long hallways take longer than drive-up units.

4. Load in a sensible order

Unit contents are usually stacked by whatever went in last. Pull boxes out to a staging area by the door first so the crew can reach furniture, then load heavy pieces against the truck's front wall and build tiers back toward the door.

5. Close out the unit

Sweep, check corners and shelves, take a photo of the empty unit, remove your lock and complete the move-out the way the facility asks. Keep the confirmation.

Keeping the cost down

Labor-only help is usually the budget-friendly choice for a storage move because you are not paying for a company's truck. Compare the full estimate — crew size, minimum hours and any fees — rather than the hourly rate alone. A well-staged unit and a truck parked at the door shorten the job.

Storage move-out checklist

  1. Gate and office hours written down; booking window fits inside them.
  2. Move-out notice given on time.
  3. Truck sized from the unit's contents.
  4. Gate code and unit number shared with the crew.
  5. Boxes staged at the door before heavy items come out.
  6. Unit swept, photographed and lock removed.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to be at the storage unit when the crew arrives?
Plan to be. You control gate access and the truck, and someone should confirm what goes and what stays.
Can the crew bring a truck to my storage unit?
Not through Hire Moving Labor. Bookings are labor-only, so you supply the rental truck, trailer or container.
Can I move from a storage unit straight into a new home in one booking?
Yes, with loading & unloading, if one company covers both addresses. You drive the truck between them.
